Lego 10 Frame

This was an interactive way to get my little man more engaged in exploring addition up to ten.

Lego 10 frame and huge dice.

What you need:
- Lego baseplates (I used a peel-and-stick baseplate from Creative QT)

- selection of Lego blocks (I chose to colour code to match with the dice)

- two inflatable dice from Target

How it works:

We are still working on our basic addition up to ten with my little man. Using Lego blocks immediately made working on addition way more appealing, interactive and engaging.

I simply set out a 10 frame using the yellow blocks and then lined up six red blocks and six green blocks down the sides.

The aim was for my son to roll one dice at a time and then add that number of that colour blocks to the 10 frame. Once both colours had been added to the 10 frame my son would have to tell me the total number of blocks.

After a few turns we even introduced the idea of even and odd numbers in very simple terms. We said if the block has a partner next it then the number is even, but if the block is lonely then it is an odd number.

Once my son was done working on his addition he had fun changing the game and making it his own addition game which involved rolling the dice and building tall towers. I love it when he uses his own creative thinking to extend an activity.
