My kids have recently become really into playing dress up, especially Batman and Bat Girl. So I thought a fun way to extend their creative play would be to get them making their own superhero masks. |
Preparation:
I drew a mask shape and cut it out on the white card and used this as my template. Remember not to make it too big- maybe even measure it up against one of your kids. Then it was simply a case of gathering the materials and the kids and getting creative!
Mask Decorating:
It can get a little chaotic with an 18 month old and a 5 year old using paints so I opted to keep things mess free by using our Kwik Stix. They were perfect for this project!
I loved that both baby sis and big bro were able to make bright and bold markings on their masks. Baby sis is still at the 'scribbling stage', but it didn't matter as she was managing to fill her mask with color, minus the mess of paints! A little tip- it helps to tape down the mask to some backing paper or card so that it doesn't move around when little ones are coloring.
Big bro loved choosing colors and described the characteristics of his superhero as he decorated his mask. He was very purposeful in the marks he made which was nice to see as he's not always engaged with arts and crafts. This project certainly captured his imagination!
It was great how the Kwik Stix dried so quickly (90 seconds to be exact!), as unlike markers and paint, we weren't faced with smudges and messy hands!
Due to the fact that both kids were happily decorating and there was no concern of a mass clean up, I even got to join in too which was lots of fun. It's amazing how sitting and creating with your kids is such a motivator for them!
Once we were all done, I stuck a craft stick to the bottom corner of the mask and we left the glue to dry. A few hours later and superhero adventures were in full flow!
Baby sis was so consumed by her superhero role that I couldn't even get a clear picture of her mask in action! Sometimes the simpler crafts generate the most imagination!
