Rainbow Blocks: 5 Ways to Play

Rainbow blocks are such a fun way to freshen up block play. Here are five fun activity ideas for you to test out with your kids!

We were kindly gifted the Guidecraft Jr. Rainbow Blocks - Set of 40 by Guidecraft used in this blog. All opinions and images are our own and completely genuine. This post contains affiliate links.

If like my kids, you have littles who are natural born block builders and creators, then these fun Jr. Rainbow Blocks from Guidecraft are a great addition to your toy collection. My kids of course enjoy the simple task of open-ended building with them, but here are five more ways to play with your Jr. Rainbow Blocks.

1. Color exploration!

The first thing my kids did when they got their Jr. Rainbow Blocks was to start making colorful glasses! They loved looking through the block and seeing everything turn a different color!

It wasn't long before big bro had the great idea to start combining blocks to make new colors! Baby sis was pretty impressed with this!

Finally we all had lots of fun designing some highly fashionable eyewear!

2. Combine with another open-ended toy!

This is a really simple technique which I use regularly. I simply take two open-ended toys and put them on the floor in the toy room. Once my kids see me building with them, they are totally engaged too! Here I chose to combine our Jr. Rainbow Blocks and Way to Play Roads.

Big bro carefully engineered the building of a rainbow school and then both kids worked together to design a road system for school drop off.

Due to the open-ended nature of both toys, the play naturally evolved and encouraged so much creativity. Big bro was constantly re-designing his school to ensure the students had room to enter and exit to their cars.

3. Working on fractions!

Toys are a great way to encourage play based learning! The shapes included in the pack of Jr. Rainbow Blocks are perfect for a quick hands-on lesson about fractions for big bro who is in Kindergarten.

We started off with the simple concept of one whole and one half using the semi-circle blocks. Then I challenged my little guy to build more whole and half shapes from the blocks he had.

Then we added in the challenge of quarters using the small square blocks. This was the first time that big bro had worked on fractions. He always focuses better when he is hands-on with his learning so this was ideal!

4. Sensory color bins!

We are huge fans of sensory bins! Baby sis is especially in love with exploring different sensory materials and combining them with fun transfer tools and toys.

I set up this simple invitation to play using a few of our Jr. Rainbow Blocks and some colored rice. It worked really well because the blocks can be used as fun little color containers!

They also make great scoopers! This activity is great for sensory exploration, color conversations and fine motor skill development.

5. Light table play!

Anything looks cool on a light table, but the Jr. Rainbow Blocks are especially awesome on our Art & Play Light Activity Box!

Big bro enjoyed building colorful cars and roads, whilst baby sis was simply delighted by the colorful effect of the blocks and light!

My kids love arranging them to make pictures and then switching through the different background colors. So many 'ooos' and aaas' from them!

I hope you can see from the pictures just how much fun we've been having with our new Jr. Rainbow Blocks- thanks Guidecraft for a great open-ended toy!
