Marbled Masks

We used one of our favorite process art techniques to transform plain white masks into vibrant marbled masks!

What you need:
- plain white masks (I ordered these ones on Amazon and they are a perfect fit for kids. The pre-cut elastic rope is included but you need to tie it on yourself)
- permanent markers (we used Sharpies)
- bleeding tissue paper from Discount School Supply
- water spray bottles
- some sort of mat or tray is a good idea as it can get messy (we used our IKEA SMULA trays)

How it works:
We've been having lots of fun decorating these plain white masks with markers and Kwik Stix but I wanted to use a different technique. My kids always love using bleeding tissue paper so we tested it out and they turned out great! We started off by using the permanent markers to add some features to our masks.

Big bro added eyebrows, speed stripes and some laser buttons to his. Meanwhile baby sis decided to be a polka dot super hero and drew some circles on hers.

We then sprayed a light dusting of water onto each mask (this is why you need to use permanent marker). It's important to not add too much water because it will drown the mask and cause it to get too soggy and break apart.

Now comes the fun bit, adding the color. The kids carefully picked their color schemes and added pieces of the bleeding tissue paper to their masks.

This is a great way to work on those all important fine motor skills! The bleeding tissue paper is thin and needs a delicate touch to manipulate it into place.

Encourage your kids to cover their mask with the bleeding tissue paper to give it lots of color. When done, get them to shower one more layer of water over the mask. Again, don't add too much water or else the mask will get too wet.

Leave the masks to dry on some paper towels to avoid the color running and staining your table top.

After a couple of hours gently peel off the tissue paper to reveal beautifully marbled masks.

This was such a fun and unique way to decorate the masks. We had a blast and now we all have a pretty cool superhero disguise to wear!
