An introduction to the concept of weighing using digital scales provided links to size, weight and the idea of adding and taking away numbers.
- scales
- weights written out on paper
- an empty pot
- a collection of toys or objects (we used trains but you could use food, art materials, rocks.... anything really!)
The activity:
We started with the smallest weight, 50g, and my son kept adding trains until he got close to that weight. He soon realised that the big trains weighed more than the small trains. We used simple language like 'big, small, heavy, light' to help him understand. We worked our way through the progressively bigger weights. He enjoyed swapping his trains to try and get as close as possible to the weights and he even started detaching coal carriages to see if that helped.
