Alpha-spoon Spinner

A fun way to introduce the idea of uppercase and lowercase letters using plastic spoons and a super exciting spinner (i.e. a lazy susan).

Alpha-spoon Spinner.

What you need:
lazy susan
- white plastic spoons
- clear plastic spoons
- permanent marker
- tall glass

How it works:
My son is nearly 4 years old and is just beginning to learn about upper and lowercase letters outside of those in his name (he is very familiar with those!!). A good few minutes was spent gently spinning the lazy susan round and round before any letter work was done.

My son simply had to choose a clear spoon from the glass in the middle of the spinner and say the lowercase letter aloud. Then he spun the spinner gently round until he found the corresponding uppercase letter on a white spoon and placed it on top. I had done the first few to help him out a bit.

A few examples already completed.
Matching up the lowercase 's' and uppercase 'S'.

It is early days so lots of guidance was needed but it was great fun and certainly got him thinking about upper and lowercase letters. For this first attempt we focused on getting all of the letters in his name matched up. We will continue to add a few more letters each evening and will combine it with writing the letters out at the same time.
