I’ve recently developed a nifty little Mom hack that is proving to work a treat with my 19 month old daughter. We’ve all heard of First Aid Boxes for medical emergencies right? Well I’d like to introduce you to our Play Aid Box, vital for Mom-urgencies!

Some days I just really need to catch 10-15 minutes of time without interruption. Being a Mom of two who works part-time online, there are just those times when I have to deal with some work immediately. For me that’s when I find things a bit stressful! So I wanted to think of something that would keep my little girl entertained, without screens, and minus the long set-up and tidy up time. Hence the Play Aid Box was born.

It has seriously been a life-saver. I love that I can simply place a selection of open-ended toys in there at the start of the week, close it up, and have it easily accessible. When that Mom-urgency comes, I get it out, she gets excited and sits and plays while I work. When we are done, we tidy it up together, close the lid and store it away for next time. Every week I rotate the items in there to keep it fresh and novel. Winner!

The box we use is a huge factor in how successful this has been. It’s a Caboodles On-The-Go-Girl Pink Jelly SparkleThe real gem is that it has a mirror in it which is so perfect for toddler play and sensory exploration! The compartments are easily accessible and sturdy. She spends ages simply taking out the items and rearranging them into new compartments, testing what’s too big or too small. These are all fantastic learning opportunities for her.

Here’s what we currently have in our Play Aid Box:

- Elmo toy car
- Pretend strawberries
- DUPLO bricks, animals and a person

When you are choosing what to put in, always keep in mind safety and choking hazards. Know what your child can cope with and what might be a risk. Also try to choose materials which encourage open-ended play as these will develop creativity and imagination. Finally, work with your child’s passions. My little girl loves animals, drawing and making tea so I was sure to include some materials along these themes.

I’d love to know if this works out for you too! If you don’t have a box, you can always just fill up a basket or container. Cheers to less stressful Mom-urgencies!!
