CMA Civic Kids December Project: Cardboard Story Wheels

If your child loves telling stories and using their imagination then this activity is a must!

We've joined the CMA Civic Kids Movement which aims to bring communities together through creativity- Make Art, Make a Difference. There will be a year-long series of exhibitions, community events, and digital art calls hosted by Children's Museum of the Arts in New York City. Each month there is a different theme and a different project posted on the website. December's theme is Histories / Traditions and The Cardboard Story Wheel project is so much fun!

I love how simple this activity is to do. It only requires a few everyday supplies but it provided hours of creative fun and is awesome for literacy development!

What you need:
- cardboard or card (we used white card)
- colored card or paper
- selection of stickers
- pencil
- scissors
- black marker
- ruler
- brass fastener

Step 1: prepare the story wheel base
Cut your card into a square and then divide it into eight equal segments using a ruler and black marker.

Step 2: get sticking!
My kids love stickers so I knew this part would get their attention. Ask your child to place one sticker in each segment of the story wheel. Explain that the stickers will be used to make a story so encourage them to be as creative and diverse as possible with their sticker choices.

Step 3: add the spinner
Cut out a small arrow from colored card. Push the fastener through the end of the arrow to make a small hole and then do the same through the mid-point of the story wheel. Be sure to give the fastener a good twist to loosen up the spinning area. Push the fastener all the way through and attach the back of it to the wheel.

Step 4: story-telling!
This is the fun part. Take it in turns to spin the story wheel and make up wild and wacky stories. My 5 year old loved this, especially how his favorite characters and animals were able to interact in the story!

This would be such a fun activity in the classroom. If your kids are older you could ask them to draw images on the story wheel or write story prompts. The stickers worked perfectly for the age of my son and he had a blast making up some pretty crazy stories!

Be sure to visit the CMANY website for the full tutorial and to see everyone's story wheels!
