This activity has so many engaging elements- water, light, engineering! It's no wonder my kids had a blast making their own Glo Lanterns!

What you need:
Glo Pals we used one of each color
- Picasso Tiles, using a selection of shapes adds to the fun
- water
- scooper of some sort
- we used our IKEA Flisat table for this activity, it is perfect for sensory bin play like this!

How it works:
I set up the two bins in the table. The one on the left had a selection of Picasso Tile squares and triangles, two scoopers and the Glo Pals. The one on the right was half filled with water.

When the kids first saw the set up they were super excited at the prospect of getting to use their Picasso Tiles in the water- a new and novel sensory experience for them! I explained that their challenge was to construct Glo Lanterns which they thought was really cool. They got straight to work, experimenting with the stability of their structures in the water.

Once the kids were happy with their builds I turned off the lights. 5 year old big bro opted for a classic square base. He submerged it in the water and tested out the different Glo Pal colors inside the lantern.

He then started to add some more detail to his lantern, using the triangles to make it look 'more fancy'.

22 month old baby sis in the mean time spent the first half hour merrily scooping water and putting the Glo Pals in and out of the water!

Once big bro was finished making his lantern she got a little bit jealous and set to work on her own.

Hers was a little less 'Art Deco' but it sure was effective when she added the Glo Pals!

She loved continuing to top up her lantern with water to make sure that the light stayed bright.

Once the lanterns were built, both kids had fun experimenting with changing the colors. There were lots of great questions being asked, like 'what if we put all the colors in the lantern?'.

Big bro even challenged himself to holding his lantern out of the water. It was a little leaky!!

This really was a great sensory activity for both ages. The novelty of using their Picasso Tiles in the water added a real fun-factor, with the Glo Pals providing the wow-factor! I left the set-up out for the rest of the evening and it got so much play. Big bro even made them a little stove-top cooker. So much creativity!
