Lights, camera... PLAY! 5 Simple Light Box Activities for Kids

Light boxes and tables brighten up play in so many different ways. Here are five very simple ways to enhance play with a light box set up using inexpensive items.

We were kindly gifted the Art Light Activity Box used in this blog by Art & Play. All opinions and images are our own and completely genuine. This post contains affiliate links.

Light boxes and tables have such a great way of making an ordinary set up seem magical! In this blog I'm going to share five very easy set ups which my kids always enjoy on our Art & Play Light Box. They are all made using items we already had in the house.

1. Button Sort

My kids both love exploring our big box of buttons, but add some cool neon pots from the Dollar Tree and a light box and the play was way more engaging.

My 2 year old daughter enjoyed sorting the buttons into the pots, doing her best to match the colors and decide which buttons were too big for the pots. This was great for her vocabulary and fine motor skills.

2. Under the Sea Small World

My kids both love small worlds, and I love setting them up too! I teamed up our glass pebbles, shells, sea creatures and mini sea net to make this inviting under the sea small world.

Big bro, who is 5 years old, loved being hands on with all of the materials. He creatively embarked on under-water adventures with the sea creatures. This set up was perfect for sparking his imagination!

3. Magnetic Tile Engineering

Big bro had the idea to put our Picasso Tiles on the light box and they looked so cool!

Both kids then enjoyed creating shapes and building creations with the tiles.

It was particularly cool how we could change the color of the light on the light box to alter the appearance of the tiles. Big bro was constantly building volcanoes in lava and boats in water by changing the color of the light.

4. Straw Shapes

This just goes to show how sometimes the most play arises from the cheapest of materials. I cut up some neon straws and left them out with cups for baby sis to explore.

She enjoyed carefully arranging them into shapes and patterns... and not so carefully tipping them everywhere as toddlers do!

Once all of the straws were out on the light box, she then carefully sorted them back into the correct color cups. Another great one for fine motor skills.

5. Foam & Pebble Hearts

This cute little heart-themed set up was perfect for baby sis and her love of all things sorting! I put four foam hearts on the light box- two pink and two red. I then added lots of pink and red pebble hearts for her to sort.

She loved exploring the heart shapes and carefully sorted them by color. The foam works great on the light box as it creates such a bold silhouette.

Again, it was also really cool changing the color of the light. It was like creating a whole new activity each time!

As you can see, we are LOVING having a light box to play with! There are endless options for ways to use everyday materials to enhance sensory learning. A light box is not cheap, but we are so thankful for our Art & Play Light Box and really do feel it is a play resource worth investing in.
