The Day It Rained Hearts Bookmarks

Using one of our favorite Valentine's books for some watercolor painting inspiration.

What you need:
- a copy of The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond
- white A4 watercolor paper (white card will also work)
- a set of watercolor paints
- paintbrushes
- water
- white crayon
- heart stickers (we used ones from Target)
- painter's tape

How it works:
Before we start a book-based activity we always like to sit and read the book together, carefully discussing the illustrations. Then we get crafty!

Start off by dividing the piece of watercolor paper into three equal sections using the painter's tape. Then use the white crayon to draw raindrops onto the paper. My 22 month old was very confused as to why she couldn't see her raindrops! It is worth helping out if your artist is quite young as you do need to make a bold mark with the crayon.

Next up we used the green watercolor paint to add some grass at the bottom of each bookmark, and blue for the sky. If working with an older artist you might want to go into more detail about the color of the sky when it rains and see if they can mix their paints to make more of a grey color.

As your child paints they will notice that their crayon marks are now visible. You can explain to them that these are the raindrops like the ones in the book. The great thing about using a tape border is that it doesn't matter if the painting is not neat, just encourage your child to fill the page with color!

While we waited for the paint to dry, we read the book together again. My little one excitedly compared her raindrops to the ones in the book! Once the paint has dried, you can invite your little one to add some heart stickers so that their bookmarks are raining hearts!

Then simply peel off the tape and cut the paper into three lovely bookmarks!

My daughter was so proud to use her bookmark the next time we read the book!
