Give your child a colorful surprise as they make fizzy hearts using the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction.
What you need:
- heart shaped mold or ice cube tray
- Kool Aid
- baking soda
- vinegar
- pipette and spoons

I love how easy this activity was to prep, yet it kept my nearly 2 year old busily investigating for nearly an hour! Simply add a small amount of baking soda and Kool Aid to each heart compartment in the mold (I used approx. 1/4 teaspoon of each). Be sure to give them a little stir, and spread out the colors so that your little one doesn't know which color is coming next!
I placed all materials on a tray to help contain the mess. In addition to the hearts, I put out a dish filled with white vinegar, a pipette and a few spoons.
I LOVED watching baby sis' face as she added the first squirt of vinegar. The heart started bubbling and fizzing green!
She continued to add vinegar, experimenting using the pipette and spoons.
It was really cool listening to her squeal the color name each time she added the vinegar.
This activity was great for her sensory exploration, as well as developing color vocabulary and recognition. Using the pipette and spoons was also helpful for her fine motor development.
The great thing is that you can keep adding more baking soda and vinegar to prompt more reaction to occur. Baby sis also enjoyed using the spoon to mix the contents of the hearts. A great opportunity for her to enjoy some messy STEAM play!
