Under the Sea Mixed Media Picture

A fun combination of process art and watercolor painting to make vibrant under the sea pictures.

What you need:
- A4 white card
- Kwik Stix and / or Thin Stix in shades of blue
- Sharpie marker
- bubble wrap
- watercolor paints (our favorites are from Ooly)
- water
- paint brush
- a tray or messy mat (we use the PlaSmart Messmatz, large size)

How it works:
We started off by cutting our bubble wrap into strips. Then it was a case of the kids using the Kwik Stix and Thin Stix to add different shades of blue to the bumpy side of the bubble wrap.

Both 2 yr old baby sis and 5 yr old big bro enjoyed the sensory novelty of mark making on bubble wrap! Using Kwik Stix paint sticks for this part was a great little hack. It was pretty much mess free in comparison to adding paint to the bubble wrap.

Once the sheet of bubble wrap was covered in blue, the kids flipped it over onto the white card and pushed it down.

Big bro particularly liked this part as he meticulously popped every single bubble!

After the bubble wrap is pressed onto the card, just peel it off to reveal a fun bubble print.

Once the kids had covered their card in blue bubble prints it was time to start drawing some fish. I did baby sister's for her (hard to tell I know!), but big bro enjoyed using the Sharpie to draw tropical fish in his sea. As the Kwik Stix only take 90 seconds to dry, this could be done immediately.

Now it was time to get the watercolor paints out. We talked about the types of colors we might expect to see on tropical fish. The kids did a great job of adding a splash of color to their scenes.

I always like using watercolor paints with my toddler because they are much more forgiving than acrylic paints. Their lighter nature means that the page does not end up covered in thick brown blobs of paint.

Both kids did an awesome job making their mixed media under the sea pictures. As it is Teacher Appreciation Week they decided that their pictures would make perfect thank you cards for their swim coaches.
