Lemon Volcanoes!

Turn lemons into erupting volcanoes with just a few simple ingredients!

What you need:
- lemons (we used two)
- sharp knife (for adult use only)
- baking soda
- white vinegar
- dish soap
- food coloring (we used blue, pink and yellow)
- craft sticks
- a tray to contain the overflowing 'lava'
- some spoons and containers

How it works:
We first saw this activity on Babble Dabble Do and couldn't wait to give it a try. To prepare the lemons I sliced off the bottom to make sure they could stand up. Then on the other end I cut out the core and removed the pips.

Now it was time for the kids to get involved. With their craft sticks they squished up the inside of the lemons as much as possible, keeping all of the juice inside. Next up they added a few drops of their food coloring and a squirt of dish soap. The lemons were all prepped and ready to go. I prepared a small bowl of white vinegar and yellow food coloring each to act as additional lemon juice (we only had two lemons!) to keep fueling the lava flow. All that was left to do was add the baking soda and revel in the erupting colors and noisy fizzes!

The lemons looked so cool as the citric juices reacted with the baking soda.

Once the reactions slowed down, the kids added some more of their 'lemon juice' mixture to their volcanoes, followed by more baking soda.

Both kids loved the constant flowing of lava and couldn't stop adding their ingredients to make the reactions continue! I also encouraged them to use their craft sticks to stir the ingredients inside the lemons.

We loved how the colors started to flow into one another, creating the most beautiful multicolored bubbly lava!

This is a really fun scientific experiment to explore with your kids if you have some leftover lemons. It worked well with both my 2 year old and 5 yr old because they could be hands on and had control over their own volcanic reactions!
