Marbled Crayon Rocks

Melting crayons on heated rocks makes for some pretty awesome marble patterns!

What you need:
- rocks (smooth style large pebbles work best)
- oven (350 degrees)
- baking tray and tin foil
- crayons (peeled)

How it works:
5 year old big bro had a blast with this! Full credit must go to @leftbraincraftbrain for sharing this activity on Instagram, I'm so glad we tried it! Start off by putting your rocks on a foil-covered baking tray. Then heat the rocks in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. During this time you can be peeling the paper off the crayons.

Once the rocks are removed from the oven, place the tray on a cooling rack of some sort so that it doesn't damage the table. You obviously need to take precautions when your child is near the hot rocks and baking tray. I very much recommend doing this on a one-to-one basis. Carefully hold the crayons to the warm rocks and watch what happens!

At first big bro enjoyed actually trying to draw a picture with the melting crayon! But he soon realized how cool it looked to hold several crayons together and watch all the colorful wax run down the rock!

After the rocks are covered in color, set them aside and allow them to dry. Some of the color combinations came out so cool!

Big bro thought it was really neat that the crayon wax then set on the rocks. We often use the rocks in small world play, they work especially great as planets in space-themed sensory bins!
