The Train Game

A train-themed homemade board game that encourages taking turns and counting.

The train game board.

How to make the board:
- use either foam or cardboard to make a square base
- use coloured tape to make three different tracks, each with the same number of squares on them
- use permanent marker to draw on start signs, station signs and obstacles (cranes, rivers, crocodiles etc.)
- if you like you can add a prize for the winner (I hid a chocolate coin in the tape rolls at the end of the board)
- I used the mini Thomas trains as the playing pieces
- a dice

How to play 'The Train Game'
- the player rolls the dice and counts the white spots
- the player moves their train along the track that many squares
- players take it in turns and the first player to reach their train station at the end of their track is the winner
- depending on the age of your players you can add rules such as a crane means free lift to the next space or the crocodile means go back to the start (we didn't get that far with my son as the taking turns and counting was enough)

Counting out his squares.
Claiming his winner's prize.
