This activity was inspired by a Steam Kids Challenge 5 Day Challenge experiment. Combine 1/2 cup baking soda with a approx. 5 drops of food coloring and 4 teaspoons of water. Mix together - it should form a dry dough which is brightly colored and crumbles when squished.
Place the mixture into the heart dish, hiding a few heart gems or sequins in the middle, and compact it down.
Turn it out onto the tray ready for the messy play! Repeat this process for all of the colors.
Next up you need to make the magical solution. Combine a generous helping (we used a whole bottle!) of vinegar with a teaspoon or two of dish soap into a squeeze bottle or jug. Set this out along with the colored hearts on your tray. I also added some fun fine motor tools for my kids to use. They were pretty excited when they saw the set up!
Let your kids enjoy the cool erupting reactions as they put the vinegar solution onto the hearts!
They will soon discover the hidden heart treasure! Although I think I may have added a little too much dish soap as the heart sequins were drowning in bubbles!
My kids loved using the tools to mix the colors together! Big bro especially enjoyed scooping the heart dough, squishing it and cutting it with his heart wand as well.
It wasn't long before he decided to scoop all of the remaining heart dough into the entire jug of vinegar. This made a pretty cool erupting jug volcano!!
Baby sis was just as hands-on with the experiment. She was mesmerized by the continued bubbling and fizzing each time she combined the hearts and vinegar.
Once my kids finally discovered some of the treasure under the depths of the bubbles, they had fun hiding it all over again in the bubbles for each other to find!
A really fun messy science experiment to keep multiple ages engaged. I love that there are so many fun elements happening at the same time!
