CVC Connect Three

This fun take on the classic game of Connect 4 is sure to get your kids engaged in their letter recognition and CVC words!

CVC Connect Three

What you need:
- Connect 4 game
- dot stickers
- pen or pencil
- CVC word book- we used ABC See, Hear, Do by Stefanie Hohl

The set up.

How it works:

We recently got Connect 4 and both my 4 yr old and 1 yr old love it- although we are yet to actually play a proper game! They just enjoy the fine motor workout of slotting in the counters in various patterns. I decided to jump on big brother's love of the game, and turned it into a fun CVC word activity for him.

The first stage was to write out some CVC words on the dot stickers. We used a great book called ABC See, Hear, Do for this activity because it is full of CVC words. I chose a page and copied the words out onto the dot stickers.

I kept the starting, middle and ending letters the same colour dot sticker each time to simplify the activity as it was our first attempt. Then I stuck the dot stickers only on the red counters. I used the yellow counters to block out the two left and two right columns of the rack.

Big bro was super excited by the set up. He simply had to sound out the letters for each word on the page and use the counters to make the words on the rack.

I loved how totally engaged he was with this activity. He carefully read the letters, sounded them out and then built the word using the counters.

Once he finished the page there was no stopping him. He cleared the rack and decided he wanted to write his own words for me to do the activity with. He turned to the long list of CVC words at the back of the book and got to work! This added the new dimension of working on his letter formation which was great.

We had such a good time with this activity and it definitely made literacy hands on! Best of all, the dot stickers easily peel off so we can make as many words as we like!
