Melted Monsters

This is a great way to add a fun twist to monster art. Melted crayons make for awesome crazy monster hair!

What you need:
- small canvas
- Crayola crayons
- permanent black marker
- strong craft adhesive (we used E6000)
- hair dryer
- something to cover the floor (we used an old table cloth)

How it works:
The first stage is to choose which color crayons you want to use for the hair. You can use lots or just a few, it really doesn't matter. Position the crayons just above the middle of the canvas and stick them down using strong adhesive. Then use the black permanent marker to draw a monster. This is a great opportunity to explore the creative features of monsters.

My son loved this process so much that we put together a second monster together. It's always nice to join in and craft with your littles!

The next stage involves using the hair dryer to melt the crayons. Make sure you cover your floor and you use sensible safety precautions with your kids as the hot crayon wax can fly off the canvas. Hold the canvas down at an angle and let your child hold the hair dryer over the crayons until they start to melt.

As the wax melts down the canvas, you can tilt it to create different streak patterns.

It's such an effective method of process art. It also leads to some great opportunities to discuss the effect of temperature changes on solids.

Allow the canvases to fully dry and then enjoy some monstrous role play and storytelling with your new crazy characters!
